„Susan! Is it really you? Are you all right?” Cindy asked in a rush, hardly able to believe her eyes when she saw the stunning, cinnamon-haired woman sitting at ease in a Jeep.
„You just stole my lines,” Susan said, looking at Cindy with real concern. „What in God’s name happened to you? Did you have an accident?”
Cindy looked at her friend, who was immaculate in an ice-blue silk jumpsuit that perfectly matched her gorgeous eyes. Then Cindy looked at herself. Her unstructured clothes had long since passed beyond the point of fashionable disarray. They were wet, ripped and stained by mud and vegetation to the point that their predominant color was an unappetizing greenish brown.
Cindy started to explain what had happened but the words wedged in her throat. She had just caught a view of Trace from the corner of her eye. He was staring at Susan as though transfixed. It wasn’t the first time Cindy had seen a man respond that way to Susan. It was the first time it had hurt, however.
„Ask Tarzan,” Cindy said curtly.
„Tarzan?” Unerringly Susan’s wide blue eyes turned toward Trace. „It does rather fit, doesn’t it?”
Trace’s smile was a scimitar curve in his hard face. „I told you Susan was all right, princess. Raul’s very good with women. Aren’t you, Raul?”
For the first time Cindy focused on the man sitting in the driver’s seat of the Jeep. Her eyes widened fractionally. Raul’s hair was silky blond. His skin was a rich, dark gold and his eyes were as black as her own. It was a startling combination, particularly when set against the bold, very masculine bone structure of his face.
Rather cynically Trace watched Cindy’s reaction to Raul. She wouldn’t be the first woman to fall at Raul’s feet after taking one look. Nor would she be the last. That didn’t mean that Trace had to enjoy watching it. Somehow he had thought Cindy would have better sense than to be knocked over by a man’s looks. God knows she had managed to ignore his own looks without difficulty, and more than one woman had told Trace he was handsome. Not Cindy, though. Not by so much as a sideways glance. The only passion she showed when she looked at him was a desire to commit mayhem on his much stronger body.
„You must be Senor Almeda,” Cindy said. „I’m Cindy Ryan, Susan’s partner.”
Raul’s jet-black eyes widened as he looked at the rumpled, muddy, thoroughly disheveled creature in front of him. „It is a great pleasure, Senorita Ryan,” he said. „Susan has told me much about you.”
„I left out her enthusiasm for mud baths,” Susan said, her eyes still disbelieving. Then she added, „You really are all right, aren’t you?”
„Nothing a hot bath and a decent bed won’t cure.”
„But of course,” Raul said instantly. „Please, get in the Jeep.”
„Thought you’d never ask,” Trace said dryly. Before Cindy could object, he picked her up and dumped her in the back seat of the open Jeep.
„We were just checking on the bridge over Orchid Ravine,” Raul explained as he drove down the muddy road.
